Exploring wood properties when exposed to water

This afternoon in science the students got the opportunity to explore five different types of wood (pine, redwood, linden wood, plywood, particleboard) and how they react when they are placed in water and when water is dropped on them. We were looking to see if any water would soak into the wood and  discovered that particle board absorbed some water. Everyone also found out that the water acted like a glue when two pieces of wood were wet and they were then put together.

After we had explored dropping water onto the wood for awhile they then put the wood in water basins to see if the wood would float or not. All five pieces of wood floated but we discovered that some sunk a little farther down than others. We had to make sure to get down to eye level with the water to see the difference in floating between the woods. Enjoy the pictures of the students exploring below...
